Choosing the right drywall materials is the first step toward a successful installation. GTA projects face specific material requirements driven by Ontario Building Code, climate, and building type. Standard 1/2-inch regular board covers most interior walls, but moisture-resistant green board or purple board is required in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Fire-rated 5/8-inch Type X board is mandatory in garages, furnace rooms, and between units in multi-residential buildings. Soundproof board like QuietRock delivers STC ratings that standard assemblies cannot match. Beyond the boards themselves, finishing materials make or break the final result. All-purpose joint compound works for most applications, but lightweight compound sands easier for ceiling work, and setting-type compound (hot mud) provides faster dry times and superior strength for first coats and high-build applications. Paper tape remains the industry standard for flat joints, while self-adhesive mesh tape pairs with setting compound for faster application. Metal corner bead, vinyl bead, and paper-faced flexible bead each serve different corner conditions. GTA pricing for drywall materials fluctuates with supply chain conditions and seasonal demand. Spring and summer renovation season typically sees higher prices and occasional shortages on specialty products. Buying through a contractor who maintains supplier relationships often yields better pricing than big-box retail, especially on full-project material packages.
